What could be more fun than samurai foster dogs and ninja socks? Not much if you ask me. The penciled image above is from “Dog eat Doug” book 2. Years ago I had done a Sunday strip which featured Sophie and Doug as samurai. I had always wanted to revisit the idea. Low and behold, the joy of graphic novels is that you can take a simple idea and blow it up into an entire chapter!
As you can already tell, book 2 features a lot of foster dogs. Obviously my real life fosters were featured heavily in the comic strip, the limitations of newspapers really don’t allow for expansive adventures. Now I get to tell these dogs’ stories with the same heart, but on a larger scale. And hopefully a funny one.
Book 2 will have foster dogs going on a Monty Python-esque quest and battling ninja sock assassins. And, my favorite foster of all time may or may not make a dramatic entrance in the second volume. Spoiler alert: Annie’s in book 2. That’s all I’ll say for now. She never got the intro she deserved in the comic strip, but I mapped out a stellar one for the graphic novel. Picture an Edgar Allan Poe and Sherlock Holmes mash up.
Book one is almost finished. Changed up quite a bit from the first draft. Even ripped out an entire chapter (which will make it into a later volume). Once we have the story finalized, I only have a few pages left to ink. Right now, I’m finishing up the pencils for book 2. Both books will be done by June.
Rest assured, now that I’ve got my production schedule oiled up and running smoothly, I’ll share more previews and process videos here and on my Instagram (@dogeatdougcomics). Make sure you sign up for my newsletter, if you haven’t already. Aside from it containing more previews of the upcoming books, I’ve started a DeD street team. If you already signed up but want to be a part of the street team, just send me your email and I’ll add you.
Till next time!
